After completing his degree in Business at Lancaster University in 2007, Ben started working in the finance department of his local hospital. Ben was able to gain experience in a number of different roles within the department, primarily working on the management, analysis and reporting on expenditure of different departments.

After a few years, Ben took a role at the world-renowned Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge as part of the team that calculates and manages income generation and then moving to commissioning at the NHS in London.

"My career so far has all been within the NHS, however has been extremely varied across multiple different areas which has given be a very broad understanding of accountancy and healthcare as a whole."

Throughout his career, Ben has found that having the ACCA Qualification has given him a really broad knowledge across different areas of finance.

"During the qualification you study all the main types of accountancy: Audit, Tax, Management and Financial Accounting, thus giving you more career options in the future."

For those wanting an accountancy career, Ben recommends getting as much experience as possible. “Pick up any relevant experience you can, as often experience is given more weight than qualifications.

"Personally I always advise undergraduate accountancy students that experience and a chartered qualification are highly regarded in the accountancy field."
